Paoli Memorial Association LogoThe Paoli Memorial Grounds and Paoli Battlefield in Malvern is ours to enjoy, we can walk our dogs, take a hike, jog, play with our kids, and enjoy the great outdoors. We come to The Malvern Fire Company Fair, use the tennis courts and watch the Chester Valley Little League play ball. There is the Malvern Memorial Day Parade and Spaghetti Dinners and Cake Walks a fun fascinating slice of small town USA!  All of this is done by the volunteers of the Paoli Memorial Association a non-profit organization without tax dollars.  We need you help in upkeep with the grounds, preserving the monuments, and making this place safe and accessible to the public.

The Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund LogoPaoli Battlefield Preservation Fund is also a volunteer non-profit sister organization.  The PBPF is currently engaged in a major project to attain National Historic Landmark status for both the Paoli Memorial Grounds and the Paoli Battlefield.  This non-profit also needs your help in making this area a National Historic Landmark and a destination for historic tourism.  Please come and enjoy this great dinner event.

While we continue to provide services to the community, and help cushion the blow to taxpayers of the Borough, the costs and needs continue to increase and therefore the need to expand our fundraising efforts and volunteer support has become critical.

We have made progress since announcing that we had received a grant from the ABPP (American Battlefield Protection Program) in 2014 with the goal of become one of only 2500 sites nationally that bear the destination of National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.   Please check our site regularly as we will keep this page updated on our latest status.

Update 4 – December 2015

We are moving forward with both our American Battlefields Protection Program Grant and our submission to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.  We invited National Park Service managers and historians to a field visit in late October which was successful.  We are moving forward on the NHL and are refining our specific statement of national significance.  Our in-depth research and documentation, covering over 200 years from sources all across the nation, demonstrated that whenever “Paoli” was mentioned in public discourse, American’s instantly recognized that it stood for a national ideal – Americans fight ferociously and aggressively and, when victorious, would treat the defeated with mercy and decency.  This was in start contrast to the atrocities inflicted on Continental soldiers at Paoli.  “Mad Anthony” Wayne’s payback, two years later at the successful midnight, bayonets-only, raid on Stony Point, resulted in over 600 British prisoners and their humane treatment after surrendering.  This, combined with America’s first battle cry, Remember Paoli, created a national value that is a proud part of our legacy to this very day.  In recent years the origin of this American standard has been temporarily forgotten, but our efforts will help bring it back to mind.
In addition, we are updating the official record of the Paoli Battlefield site on the National Register of Historic Places to reflect many of the unique properties and impact of the battle on both the Revolutionary War and upon American national culture.  The National Park Service is working with us to implement additional actions and techniques to protect related historic sites, preserving our heritage and educating the public.  Look for more information on this in future issues and on our website.”

Update 2 – May 2015

We have completed and sent to the National Park Service our Letter of Inquiry notifying them of all of criteria we believe would make the Paoli Battlefield a National Historic Landmark.  We now await an answer from the National Park Service as to whether we can continue with our goal of becoming one of the few National Historic Landmarks in this country, or, if we don’t met their threshold, of updating our data on our National List of Historic Places registry.  We expect to hear back from them sometime this summer.

We also held our first public meeting about National Historic Landmark status at Malvern Borough building on Wednesday, April 28th, 2015.  and answered a lot of questions from the public.  We were very encouraged by the show of support from the public of our efforts so far and of the overall process from our distinguished project team. Please remember that we still need your help to fund supporting activities that will make are nomination more successful to the Interior Department.
